Focus for This Month
Kidney Month
March is National Kidney Month. This is something nearest to you - the dialysis community - whether as a person on dialysis or a family member/supporter of someone on dialysis. This is our time to educate others and share our stories.
In the United States:
Chronic kidney disease is a serious condition affecting around 35.5 million people. Often overlooked until symptoms appear, CKD is progressive and can put you at risk for serious health complications including heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help you manage CKD and its complications from progressing.
102,000 people are waiting on a kidney transplant.
27,575 kidney transplants were performed in 2025.
More than 800,000 people have End Stage Renal Disease or kidney failure.
As of mid-2025, 550,000 people were on dialysis.
Simple steps you can take to protect your kidneys and reduce your risk of kidney failure.
Manage blood pressure and monitor blood glucose levels.
Take medicine as prescribed and avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen.
Aim for a healthy weight.
Reduce stress
Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
Quit smoking.
As a dialysis patient, consider using this month as an opportunity to share with others your experience with kidney failure and dialysis. Don't hide in the shadows. Share your story. Before my kidneys stopped working out of the blue, I had never really heard of dialysis and had no idea what any of this was all about. You can be the person to enlighten others in case they find themselves on this journey.
